Bahasa Melayu AI Prompts Drop Malaysian Bank Names 30% – PRecious AI Authority Index 2026

COUNTRY: Malaysia

CATEGORY: In The PRess, News

When consumers and corporate decision-makers use artificial intelligence to evaluate banking options, where do Malaysian financial institutions stand?

Findings from our research, the PRecious AI Authority Index: Southeast Asia Banking 2026, show that AI recommendation engines do not treat all market presence equally. Based on 180 market tests conducted across 11 AI engines between August and October 2026, the Malaysian banking sector displays a clear divide between overall brand presence and top recommendation prominence.

The PRecious AI Authority Index 2026 reveals a distinct split in Malaysian banking visibility across 180 AI search tests. While Maybank commands a 74% first-mention share, competitor CIMB appears in 79% of answers but secures the top recommendation spot in only 2% of cases.

Maybank vs. CIMB: The Gap Between Presence and Prominence

In our testing sample, Maybank established commanding leadership across every measured metric, while CIMB showed broad inclusion but low initial prominence.

  • Maybank Answer Reach: Maybank appeared in 92% (91.7%) of tested answers in Malaysia.
  • Maybank First-Mention Share: Maybank was named first in 74% (74.4%) of responses.
  • CIMB Answer Reach: CIMB entered 79% (78.9%) of tested answers.
  • CIMB First-Mention Share: CIMB secured the top recommendation spot in only 2% (2.2%) of answers.

This pattern demonstrates a crucial distinction for corporate marketing teams: appearing in an AI answer list is fundamentally different from being presented as the primary choice. While CIMB enters most comparisons, AI engines rarely select it as the initial answer.

How Bahasa Melayu Prompts Reduce Brand Recommendations

One of the most notable findings in the Malaysian market is the language omission effect.

When AI prompts were submitted in Bahasa Melayu, answers named an average of 1.36 fewer banks per response compared to the exact same questions asked in English. This represents a 30% reduction in visible brand options.

Instead of simply translating English information, AI models narrow their selection list when processing Bahasa Melayu queries. Challenger brands that appear in English responses frequently disappear when users query in Malay.

“Malaysia is multilingual, and customers do not all ask the same question in the same way,” said Sunita Kanapathy, Regional Vice President and Malaysia Market Lead at PRecious Communications. “A regional English message is only the starting point. Banks need locally relevant facts, examples, and third-party proof that remain clear when the language and customer need change.”

Evaluating 11 AI service proxies across 180 tests demonstrates why traditional SEO metrics no longer tell the full story. Maybank leads all four tested decision categories on both total answer reach (92%) and first-mention share (74%), establishing a benchmark for Answer Engine Optimization.

Performance Across Four Banking Dimensions

The study evaluated AI responses across four distinct decision pillars in Malaysia:

  1. Trust and Choice: Maybank led with an 83.3% first-mention share in trust and reliability queries.
  2. Business Banking: Maybank led in corporate and SME queries, where business questions naturally generated broader bank lists overall.
  3. Personal Banking: Maybank maintained top visibility across retail products and customer access.
  4. Public Role and ESG: Maybank held the primary spot for questions on national contribution and social impact.

Maybank led all 4 out of 4 tested dimensions on both total answer reach and first-mention share.

Practical Action Points for Malaysian Communications Leaders

Market positions in automated search are point-in-time snapshots based on available web proof, meaning they are not permanent.

“Maybank’s strong performance reflects deep public evidence, but market leadership in AI is not permanent,” noted Lars Voedisch, Founder and Group CEO of PRecious Communications. “Challenger banks can win specific customer queries by publishing detailed, evidence-backed proof around targeted business and consumer services.”

For Market Leaders

  • Verify Existing Statements: Regularly check that public AI descriptions of products, rates, and conditions match current official records.
  • Correct Outdated Material: Address conflicting launch dates or expired terms across owned websites and third-party publisher pages.

For Challenger Banks

  • Avoid Generic Claims: Broad statements about being a “leading bank” do not move AI engines. Focus on specific buyer needs such as cross-border payments, SME financing, or specialized accounts.
  • Build Documented Evidence: Provide verifiable customer cases, third-party audits, and local language press materials that AI models can reference.
