How AI Search Engines Rank Indonesia’s Top Banks: Key Insights for Brand Leaders

COUNTRY: Indonesia

CATEGORY: In The PRess, News

When prospective clients or businesses ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to recommend a bank in Indonesia, which institutions actually top the list?

The PRecious AI Authority Index 2026 analyzed 180 tested market responses in Indonesia across 11 AI service routes in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. The research demonstrates that AI engines do not select a single, undisputed winner across all financial needs. Instead, the top-ranked bank changes based on the specific question asked and the language used.

BCA and Bank Mandiri Share Overall Market Leadership

Evaluating AI search visibility in English alone creates massive blind spots for Indonesian brand leaders. Study data reveals that switching query prompts to Bahasa Indonesia alters the top-ranked bank in 38% of matched comparisons. Furthermore, local-language AI answers name fewer banks per response, making top-tier placement critical.

Across the overall Indonesian dataset, Bank Central Asia (BCA) and Bank Mandiri tied for overall first-mention share at 34% each. In terms of overall presence, BCA appeared in 86% of tested answers, while Bank Mandiri appeared in 82%.

However, examining the four core customer query categories reveals sharp segment specialization:

  • Personal Banking (Consumer): BCA led first mentions at 63%, compared to Bank Mandiri at 25%. BCA achieved a total answer reach of 93.8% in this category.
  • Trust and Choice: BCA led first mentions at 53%, compared to Bank Mandiri at 22%. BCA achieved 100% answer reach across all tested trust questions.
  • Business Banking: Bank Mandiri led first mentions at 56%, while BCA recorded 19%. Bank Mandiri reached 91.7% of business answers, supported by strong public evidence around its Kopra digital cash management platform.
  • Public Role and Authorities: Bank Mandiri led first mentions at 35%, compared to BCA at 23%. Bank Mandiri recorded an answer reach of 87.5% in this group.

Relying on a single AI platform to benchmark your brand reputation is risky. When asking which Indonesian bank to trust, ChatGPT and Gemini rank BCA first, while Perplexity places Bank Mandiri at the top. This divergence stems from how different engines process independent research and institutional news reporting.

The Bahasa Indonesia Language Effect: How Translation Shifts Rankings

Checking AI visibility in English alone creates major blind spots for Indonesian brand owners.

When queries were switched from English to Bahasa Indonesia, 38% of matched comparisons (10 out of 26 pairs) changed which bank was named first in the response.

In addition, Bahasa Indonesia answers named an average of 0.91 fewer banks per response than English answers. This means local-language search outputs are more concentrated, making first-mention prominence even more critical for brands operating in Indonesia.

AI Engine Disagreements: The Multi-Platform Breakdown

PRecious Communications' Banking AI Authority Index 2026 shows how visibility changes by question, service and language across six markets and 11 AI services / LLMs.

Relying on a single AI platform to gauge brand reputation is risky. Different AI engines process the same question using different retrieval methods, sources, and algorithms.

For example, when asked: “Which banks in Indonesia would you trust, and why?”, the tested engines produced noticeably different list orders:

  • ChatGPT: Placed BCA first, followed by Bank Mandiri, BRI, and BNI.
  • Gemini: Placed BCA first, followed by Bank Mandiri and BRI.
  • Perplexity: Placed Bank Mandiri first, followed by BRI, BCA, BNI, and CIMB Niaga.

Because Perplexity draws heavily from independent research and institutional reporting, Bank Mandiri’s documented corporate coverage shifted it to the top spot on that specific route.

Practical Checklist for Indonesian Banking Communicators

  1. Align Content to Specific Customer Tasks: Do not publish generic claims about being a leading bank in Indonesia. Build dedicated web pages, customer case studies, and media briefings around distinct needs like SME trade finance or personal digital banking.
  2. Audit Both Local Language and English Content: Regularly review how AI tools answer questions in both Bahasa Indonesia and English to ensure product details, fees, and eligibility terms are accurate across all languages.
  3. Build Verifiable Public Proof: AI search tools rely heavily on third-party verification, news reporting, and official records. Back up claims with documented outcomes, user cases, and clear operational data.
