Communications Is the Missing Piece in Singapore’s Startup Resurgence

COUNTRY: Singapore

CATEGORY: Insights

Singapore just climbed to 4th place in the 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, up from 5th last year. It’s a big win for the country and reflects what many of us already know: Singapore, and Southeast Asia more broadly, is becoming one of the most exciting places in the world to build a startup.

There’s talent, capital, market access, and a government that’s all-in on innovation. But in all the energy and momentum, there’s something a lot of startups are still missing: communication.

Why Communication Deserves a Spot at the Table

When you’re building something new, it’s easy to focus on product, growth, and fundraising. Communication often gets pushed to the side or treated like an afterthought. But here’s the truth. It’s not a “nice to have”, it’s essential.

  • Investors need to understand your vision and see your traction clearly
  • Customers only buy if there’s a real pain point you address
  • Your team needs a story they can get behind
  • Your broader community wants to know if they can trust you

All of these can be addressed by communicating. When you share your story, you build a value proposition, establish credibility, and create a genuine connection. Think purpose-led brands like LUSH or passion-led brands like GoPro. Other great examples are brands that have deeply connected with their audience throughout their lives – like Pokemon.

But what makes your communication effective?

Be Authentic: Share Progress, Not Perfection

Running a startup is messy. That’s normal. Don’t wait until everything is polished to start sharing. People connect with progress, not perfection. Talk about what you’re building, what you’re learning, and how you’re evolving. It makes you real and relatable, and people appreciate that.

Tell a Story: Make It Human

Facts and features are useful, but stories are what people remember. What problem are you solving? Who are you helping? Is there a real pain point you are addressing? Why does it matter to you? When you make it personal and human, people are more likely to care and to share.

Be Bold: Don’t Be Afraid to Stand Out

In a sea of sameness, boldness is a superpower. Maybe it’s a strong point of view, a different visual style, or a quirky campaign. Don’t be afraid to do things differently. Playing it safe rarely gets noticed.

Be Clear: Communicate Value

Clarity is everything. Say what you do, who it’s for, and why it matters. Whether it’s your pitch deck, your website, or a media interview, make sure people understand the value you bring. If they don’t get it, they won’t remember it.

Singapore’s startup scene is full of potential, and Southeast Asia is rising fast. But building a great product is only part of the journey. Telling your story clearly and confidently is just as important. You are only as good as you can communicate you are.

If you’re creating something exciting, make sure people know about it. The time to start communicating is now.
