How do prominent Southeast Asian banks appear in trust-related AI questions, what explanations does AI provide and are those explanations supported by accessible public evidence?

Pulse AI Visibility Audit

As consumers turn to AI assistants for financial decisions, brand discovery is shifting from blue links to conversational answers. The PRecious AI Authority Index audits 11 AI routes across Vietnam to measure which banks lead responses and why broad visibility does not guarantee top recommendations.

When corporate finance directors, small business owners, or retail banking customers in Vietnam ask generative AI tools to recommend a financial institution, which banks actually appear, and who gets recommended first?

As tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot take on the role of automated research assistants, brand discovery is undergoing a fundamental structural change. Search engine optimization (SEO) is expanding into Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). The primary challenge for communications leaders is no longer simply earning search clicks. It is making sure your institution is visible within generative summaries, accurately described, and placed in the top recommendation position.

To assess this shift, PRecious Communications conducted an extensive empirical study across six Southeast Asian markets: the PRecious AI Authority Index: Southeast Asia Banking 2026. This report presents the localized findings for Vietnam, detailing performance metrics across 180 standardized market responses and 11 distinct AI evaluation routes.

Executive Summary: The State of AI Visibility in Vietnam

In the August 2026 benchmark snapshot, Vietnamese banking results revealed three core patterns:

  1. Vietcombank establishes strong baseline dominance: Vietcombank led both answer reach (84.4%) and first-mention share (47.8%) across all four evaluated inquiry dimensions. However, its first-place share varied significantly depending on the nature of the inquiry.
  2. Techcombank faces the "Included, Not Leading" hurdle: Techcombank attained strong answer reach (71.7%), appearing in nearly three out of four responses. Yet it secured only 12.8% of first mentions, demonstrating that being cited by an AI engine is not equivalent to leading the recommendation.
  3. The local language shift: In 32% of matched query pairs (9 of 28 eligible comparisons), switching the prompt from English to Vietnamese altered the bank named in first position. Auditing English-only prompts leaves a substantial operational blind spot.

not consumer preference, trust, or bank quality.

Vietcombank: Broad Authority With Category-Specific Vulnerabilities

Vietcombank captured 86 first mentions across 180 total answers (47.8%). It is the only bank in Vietnam that led both overall presence and first-mention volume across all four tested question groups.

However, looking at the aggregate number conceals sharp variations across specific customer decision areas:

Category Breakdown for Vietcombank

  • Trust and Choice (72.2% First Mentions | 91.7% Answer Reach): When queries centered on institutional safety, stability, systemic dependability, or general selection criteria, Vietcombank was the dominant starting recommendation. Its long-standing position as a premier state-backed institution gave it a commanding advantage in general reputation prompts.
  • Business Banking (45.8% First Mentions | 91.7% Answer Reach): In questions regarding small and medium enterprises (SMEs), cross-border trade, and corporate cash management, Vietcombank was present in 91.7% of answers. However, its first-place rate fell to 45.8% as regional and international business lenders entered the field.
  • Consumer Banking (43.8% First Mentions | 85.4% Answer Reach): For everyday retail banking, card products, mobile applications, and savings accounts, Vietcombank's first-mention share dropped below 44%. AI engines distributed first mentions across a wider competitive field of private joint-stock commercial lenders.
  • Authorities and Public Role (35.4% First Mentions | 70.8% Answer Reach): In evaluations of societal contribution, national economic development, and financial inclusion, Vietcombank recorded its lowest first-mention rate (35.4%) and lowest overall reach (70.8%).

Strategic Risk: The False Comfort of Aggregate Scale

Vietcombank demonstrates how strong institutional scale creates high search visibility. But broad awareness does not protect specific commercial products. If an enterprise buyer asks an AI assistant about automated cross-border treasury management or API-led enterprise integrations, general brand reputation alone will not guarantee the top spot. Without fresh, granular documentation, competitors can claim first position on specific commercial capabilities.

Techcombank: The "Included, Not Leading" Dilemma

Techcombank represents a classic competitive pattern identified in the regional report: high presence paired with low first-mention conversion.

Techcombank Metric Summary:

* Answer Presence: 71.7% (129 of 180 answers)

* First-Mention Share: 12.8% (23 of 180 answers)

* Matrix Classification: "Included, Not Leading"

In the regional Banking Matrix, Techcombank sits alongside institutions like CIMB in Malaysia (78.9% reach, 2.2% first mentions), BPI in the Philippines (82.8% reach, 16.1% first mentions), and OCBC in Singapore (87.5% reach, 5.4% first mentions).

AI models clearly identify Techcombank as an established market player. However, when assembling structured lists or making a primary recommendation, the algorithms consistently place state-owned or legacy institutions ahead of it.

Examining the Supporting Evidence

The research audited inspectable citations to see what evidence supported Techcombank's presence:

  • Specific Corporate Evidence: Techcombank maintains strong published materials on digital foreign exchange (FX) capabilities and clear customer guidance on biometric security compliance.
  • Third-Party Corroboration: The reviewed dataset showed limited independent verification, customer-led outcome studies, or external reporting confirming operational performance.

To shift from simply being listed to leading the recommendation, challenger banks must publish verified customer outcomes. This means moving beyond product feature announcements to show quantified client efficiency gains, operational cost reductions, and verified security metrics.

The Local Language Discrepancy: English vs. Vietnamese

A critical finding of the index is that testing AI models exclusively in English produces an incomplete and misleading view of market positioning.

In the Vietnamese sample:

  • 32% of matched comparisons (9 out of 28 eligible question pairs) named a completely different bank first when the identical question was posed in Vietnamese rather than English.
  • 68% of comparisons (19 of 28 pairs) maintained the same first-place bank across both languages.

Different First-Mentioned Bank: [==============                  ] 32% (9 pairs)

Why Do Answers Diverge?

AI answer engines draw from different retrieval indices depending on prompt language:

  1. English prompts pull heavily from regional financial press, investor relation filings, regional industry awards, and international banking guides.
  2. Vietnamese prompts crawl local news platforms, domestic regulatory portals (such as the State Bank of Vietnam), Vietnamese-language corporate web pages, and local community discussions.

When a financial institution treats its Vietnamese website content as a secondary translation of its English corporate pages, it starves local-language AI retrievers of clear, structured facts. Marketing and PR teams must audit both language paths independently.

Comparative Regional Context

To understand Vietnam's results, it helps to examine how other Southeast Asian banking markets behaved in the same study:

  • Consistent Leader Markets (Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam):
    • In Singapore, DBS led all four categories decisively (96.3% reach, 81.7% first mentions).
    • In Malaysia, Maybank led all four categories (91.7% reach, 74.4% first mentions).
    • In Vietnam, Vietcombank led all four categories (84.4% reach, 47.8% first mentions), though with a wider spread between trust (72.2%) and public role (35.4%).
  • Split Leadership Markets (Indonesia, Thailand):
    • In Indonesia, BCA led consumer banking (62.5% first mentions) and trust (52.8%), while Bank Mandiri led business banking (56.3%) and public role (35.4%).
    • In Thailand, Kasikornbank led consumer first mentions (64.6%), while Bangkok Bank led business (60.4%), trust (38.9%), and public role (33.3%).
  • Divided Inclusion and Leadership (Philippines):
    • BPI secured top answer reach across three of four categories, but BDO captured top first-mention share across all four categories.

Global Banks in Southeast Asian Answers

The report also tracked global banking examples (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citibank) across 304 regional business banking answers:

  • HSBC: Appeared in 29.3% of answers (89/304), named first in 3.6% (11/304).
  • Standard Chartered: Appeared in 19.7% of answers (60/304), named first in 0.0% (0/304).
  • Citibank: Appeared in 9.9% of answers (30/304), named first in 0.7% (2/304).

For multinational banks operating in Vietnam, the lesson is clear: international brand recognition will earn inclusion on a list, but it will not secure top recommendation status without distinct local capability proof.

How AI Services Use Sources: Observations for Communicators

The index reviewed 11 AI service proxies, revealing distinct retrieval patterns:

  • ChatGPT: Relies heavily on official brand domains, regulatory announcements, and established institutional records. Product pricing, terms, and eligibility must be explicitly documented on crawlable pages.
  • Google Gemini: Frequently balances official company web pages with national news reporting and regulatory releases. Material discrepancies between launch press releases and current website copy can weaken answer certainty.
  • Perplexity: References independent third-party sources, market research, and press coverage. Independent verification and media validation are necessary to appear prominently here.
  • Claude: Displays precise citations when search-grounded. A cited source must directly support the specific claim made in the prompt.
  • Copilot & Search Proxies: Search grounded queries frequently reference structured corporate pages, technical documentation, and professional trade coverage.
  • Local and Asian Model Proxies (Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi): Showed divergent behavior between English and regional languages, reinforcing that there is no uniform model behavior. Each engine must be audited directly.

Strategic Communications Framework

Communications and marketing executives can turn these diagnostic findings into an actionable communications program using our four-stage implementation process:

Specific Recommendations by Bank Type

For Market Leaders (e.g., Vietcombank)

  • Anchor Industry Recognitions to Tangible Benefits: Vietcombank received 2026 Sao Khue recognition for specified digital offerings. Brand content should explicitly tie these accolades to measurable user outcomes, like transaction processing speeds, reduction in payment drop-offs, and open banking security.
  • Defend Specific Verticals: Build focused evidence hubs for corporate trade, SME lending, and retail wealth management to avoid losing category ground to aggressive digital challengers.
  • Synchronize Vietnamese and English Assets: Ensure product terms, fee structures, and service announcements are updated simultaneously across both language portals.

For Challengers and Private Banks (e.g., Techcombank, VPBank, MB Bank)

  • Close the Validation Gap: Shift content budgets away from generic lifestyle advertising toward documented client case studies. Publish verified customer operational data, including transaction volume milestones and biometric security adoption rates.
  • Target High-Intent Search Queries: Position product capabilities around high-intent business inquiries, such as multi-currency treasury operations, supply chain finance, and merchant digital onboarding.
  • Earn Independent Media Scrutiny: Secure coverage in reputable business and financial publications that explore your technical architecture, operational stability, and enterprise customer success.

Methodology and Study Parameters

  • Dataset: 2,740 total response records across original, repair, and extension phases.
  • Cross-Service Comparison: 396 structured records covering six markets, two languages, three core questions, and 11 AI service routes.
  • Markets Evaluated: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam.
  • Timeframe: Point-in-time snapshot collected in August 2026; study published October 2026.
  • Important Diagnostic Limits: The index records answer presence and mention order. It does not measure bank financial performance, service quality, customer preference, or direct causal media influence. Generative models and search indices update regularly.
