AI Search in Thailand: Why English Prompts and Thai Prompts Tell Two Different Stories

How do prominent Southeast Asian banks appear in trust-related AI questions, what explanations does AI provide and are those explanations supported by accessible public evidence?

Pulse AI Visibility Audit

New data from the PRecious AI Authority Index reveals that prompt language shifts the top-recommended bank in 60 percent of matched comparisons in Thailand. Translation alone fails to secure visibility because AI engines pull distinct local-language citations. Brand leaders must audit the native Thai search journey directly.

When potential customers or corporate finance heads in Thailand turn to artificial intelligence tools to research banking options, what do they see?

Many regional brand leaders assume that visibility in global AI engines follows standard search engine rules: publish authoritative English content, translate key pages into Thai, and expect consistent representation.

The data tells a very different story.

In the inaugural PRecious AI Authority Index: Southeast Asia Banking 2026, our research team conducted a diagnostic snapshot across six Southeast Asian markets, testing 11 major AI engines and tracking 16 financial institutions.

For Thailand, one clear finding stands out above all others: prompting in English versus Thai changed the first-mentioned bank in 60 percent of eligible comparisons (15 out of 25 matched pairs).

Key Takeaway for Brand Leaders: Translation alone is not localization. AI answer engines do not simply translate an English response into Thai on the fly. Instead, they retrieve and synthesize distinct sets of local-language sources, regulatory citations, and cultural references. An English-only digital strategy leaves your brand exposed in Thai-language searches.

The 60 Percent Language Disconnect in Thailand

Across Southeast Asia, AI engines often present conflicting starting points. Region-wide, 43 percent of matched comparisons (706 of 1,628 route pairs) named a different bank first when two services answered the identical question.

However, Thailand exhibited the most pronounced language-driven divergence in our regional sample.

When identical prompts were submitted in English and Thai:

  • In 15 of 25 eligible matched comparisons (60 percent), the top recommended bank changed completely based solely on the prompt language.
  • In addition, Thai-language answers named an average of 0.94 fewer banks per answer compared to their English counterparts.

This means that relying on English PR audits or monitoring English outputs will systematically fail to reflect the competitive reality faced by Thai speakers on platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Copilot.

Divided Brand Leadership: Consumer vs. Business Banking

Beyond language, the competitive field in Thailand fragments according to the customer job being queried. Unlike markets like Singapore or Malaysia, where single institutions established consistent leads across multiple inquiry types, Thailand splits between two local institutions across four primary categories:

  • Consumer Banking: Kasikornbank leads in both presence and top prominence, capturing 85.4 percent reach and 64.6 percent of first mentions.
  • Business Banking: Bangkok Bank leads the corporate and commercial field, capturing 85.4 percent reach and 60.4 percent of first mentions.
  • Authorities and Society: Kasikornbank achieves broad visibility with 75.0 percent reach, while Bangkok Bank often leads the opening statement with 33.3 percent of first mentions.
  • Trust and Choice: Kasikornbank demonstrates near-universal presence with 91.7 percent reach, while Bangkok Bank captures the top mention in 38.9 percent of answers.

Please note: These figures reflect observed answer reach and first-mention share from the August 2026 study snapshot. First-mention describes answer order inside a generated response, not customer preference, endorsement, or financial safety.

1. Consumer Inquiries Favor Kasikornbank

When questions focus on personal accounts, digital consumer applications, and everyday retail convenience, Kasikornbank leads the opening response in roughly two out of three answers (64.6 percent). Its digital services footprint and retail ecosystem give it substantial prominence in general consumer prompts.

2. Business Inquiries Favor Bangkok Bank

When the query shifts to business expansion, trade financing, or corporate support, Bangkok Bank takes the lead, capturing 60.4 percent of first mentions. Corporate decision-makers asking AI tools for supplier financing options encounter an entirely different brand hierarchy than retail consumers.

Furthermore, across the entire region, business queries named 34 percent more banks on average (4.73 banks per answer compared to 3.52 for consumer banking). In business banking, the competitive shortlist is broader, meaning brands must provide concrete proof points to stand out rather than relying on generic corporate claims.

Why Generative AI Answers Diverge Across Platforms

Why do AI engines produce such varied results?

Our analysis revealed that AI platforms do not rely on a single consensus index. Instead, their answers reflect the underlying sources they access:

  1. ChatGPT: Relies heavily on official brand domains and regulatory disclosures. If your product documentation or market availability pages are out of date, the engine reflects those gaps.
  2. Gemini: Pulls product landing pages alongside news reporting and regulatory filings. Discrepancies between your launch announcements and active web pages can cause conflicting answers.
  3. Perplexity: Draws substantially from independent news coverage, analyst comparisons, and third-party research reports.
  4. Copilot: Often synthesizes technical documentation and enterprise references alongside broad web crawls.

When corporate communications teams produce localized press releases or marketing collateral that remain disconnected from verifiable third-party reporting, AI models struggle to corroborate claims in Thai.

Action Plan: How Communicators Can Adapt

If your brand operates in Thailand or plans to scale across Southeast Asia, here is how you can protect your digital visibility:

1. Audit the Thai-Language Experience Directly

Stop assuming English search results reflect your regional footprint. Run diagnostic checks using the specific questions Thai buyers ask, in Thai, across the major AI search engines your audience uses.

2. Connect Your Facts Across Channels

AI answer engines look for consistency across sources. Your owned digital assets, executive thought leadership, regulatory filings, and earned media coverage must tell one connected story with verifiable facts. If your corporate site states one capability but recent reporting says another, the AI engine may exclude you from the shortlist.

3. Build Proof for Specific Customer Jobs

Avoid broad, generic slogans such as "Thailand's leading bank" or "the trusted partner." Because AI engines adjust their recommendations based on the customer task, develop specific, documented case studies for retail lending, cross-border payments, or trade finance.

4. Separate Answer Prominence from Customer Preference

Being mentioned first in an AI response is a measure of visibility, not endorsement or customer satisfaction. Review what the AI engine actually says about your terms, fees, and past operational performance, rather than celebrating a simple brand mention.
